A Conversation with the Woman You’re Becoming
Your Future Self
At a conference not long ago, I asked a room full of women to do something that sounds simple: close your eyes, let the noise fall away, and picture the woman you’re becoming. Then I invited them into a conversation with her.
Through a series of questions, they explored the lives they imagined and listened for what their future selves wanted them to know. That dialogue helped bring something into focus:
What mattered
What they wanted
What they were ready to do about it.
There is something powerful about giving yourself permission to ask – and staying quiet long enough to hear your own answer.
Most of us spend our days responding…
We answer the emails, make the calls, and hold everyone else’s plans together. We can research a decision endlessly, ask five people what they think, and still feel uncertain. Somewhere in all that input, our own voice becomes harder to hear.
A conversation with your future self creates room for that voice again.
- A dream you shelved comes back into view.
- Something you’ve outgrown finally gets named.
- You recognize how long you’ve wanted to try something – and how often you’ve told yourself to wait.
Then comes the part that matters: choosing to act on what you’ve heard.
Clarity asks something of us. Once you acknowledge what you want, there is a decision to make. Will you give it time on your calendar? Have the conversation? Explore the idea? Say yes to the experience that keeps calling to you?
You can begin while you still have questions. You can take a meaningful step before you know how the whole story unfolds.
This is why I believe in retreats.
Saying yes to a retreat is already an act of listening to yourself. You’re making room for something you need, even if you can’t fully explain it yet. You’re choosing to step away from familiar demands and give your own life your attention.
One of the reasons we gather, far from home, in the hills of southern Tuscany is that there is time to stay with what surfaces. A question can begin in a guided exercise, return on a slow walk, and open into a possibility over dinner. Another woman might say something that helps you recognize your own longing. With space and support, an idea you’ve carried quietly can become something you’re ready to pursue.
This is the heart of my Less Noise. More Joy. work: notice what’s no longer working, reconnect with your own voice, get clear on what matters now, and turn that clarity into intentional choices.
Your future self helps you see what those choices could make possible. The courage, resourcefulness, experience, and wisdom you imagine in her already have roots in you. You’ve used them through other beginnings, difficult decisions, and changes you once weren’t sure you could make.
You have so much within you to draw upon.
Taking a pause helps you remember it. Taking action gives you a chance to trust it.
And that conversation remains available when you return home. At a crossroads, before an important decision, or when an opportunity stirs something in you, connect with her again. Ask your questions. Listen to what comes up. Then decide what you will do with what you hear.
The journey begins the moment you say yes—when you register, make the space, and give yourself permission to explore what’s next.
